Let me share with you some environment-friendly measures that I personally have been practicing for some time now.
1. Buy in big quantity. We Filipinos love to buy “tingi” or retail. Shampoo, vinegars, coffee, laundry soap, and more. We buy in small packages to save money (or at least, we think we save money). But did you know we can reduce garbage production if we buy in big quantities? For example, instead of shampoo in sachets, why not buy shampoo in big bottle?
2. Bring a reusable bag. When buying an item or two from a convenience store, especially if it is just a drink and a pack of chips, you don’t need to have it in a plastic bag. Plastic bags will eventually turn into garbage, and it will take mother nature decades to decompose it. But if you’re gonna buy more items, please bring a reusable bag.
3. Love dining at fast food restos? Schedule your eat-out. Make sure you schedule it meticulously because the more you eat in these restos, the more garbages are produced. Fast food restos use disposable cups, plastes, spoons and forks, and they do not have concrete waste management system.
So there you go. I know these measures may seem too simplistic or superficial for some. But, hey, great things come from simple beginnings. So go EMPOWER YOURSELF. Yes, YOU CAN be part of the solution to environment concerns, no matter how simple your part is. Remember that solution requires COLLECTIVE ACTION. Thus, if many people practice these simple, little measures, it will definitely help lead us to a changed environment. =)
